Vegas Play at the Day: Braves at Marlins

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Miami Marlins plus-160 vs. Atlanta Braves, $500 to win $800: There is solid value in betting the Marlins today because the Braves’ offense is struggling. Atlanta has scored just eight runs in its last four games, including being shutout out on Friday and managing just one run on Saturday.

While the Braves are significantly better than the Marlins, handicapping baseball requires taking current trends into consideration. And with the Braves unable to piece together big innings, it’s worth wagering on Miami.

Also, the over-under total is set at just 7.5 runs, meaning oddsmakers expect a close game. In an expected close game, always take the plus-money bet.

Current Standings: Keefer (8-4, $11,168), Grimala 6-2, $10,800), Granger (4-0, $10,255), Brewer (3-5, $8,000)
