The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.
Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.
Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.
San Diego State plus-14 at Stanford, $550 to win $500
Stanford isn't as unconquerable as everyone seems to believe. Or at least that's what I'm telling myself going into the season.
The Cardinal have defensive shortcomings, and it's going to be hard for the offense to replicate last year's incredible efficiency to make up for it — especially early in the season, and especially against San Diego State. The Aztecs had success slowing the Cardinal last year, and there's no reason to believe it won't hold its own again this year.
San Diego State has almost all the key players back on a defense that held Stanford to 10 first downs in the Aztecs' 20-17 victory a year ago. The Aztecs did have a fortunate plus-3 turnover margin in the game that they can't expect to duplicate.
But with a 14-point betting line, they won't need to. San Diego State is too solid to open the season with a blowout loss. Look for the Aztecs to hang tight with the Cardinal, which won't be as imposing in early-season form.
