Vegas Play of the Day: Jets vs. Blackhawks

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Winnipeg Jets minus-1.5 vs. Chicago Blackhawks: $400 to win $700

It's always a dangerous taking the road team on the puck line, but I really like what the Jets are doing...and really don't like what the Blackhawks are doing.

Before beating Pittsburgh on Wednesday, the Blackhawks had lost 19 of their pervious 22 games and slipped into last place in the NHL. They scored six to beat the Penguins, but before that had not scored more than four goals since Nov. 29.

The Jets meanwhile, have been scoring at will, tallying seven, six and five goals their last three games, which included a 6-3 win over Chicago on Tuesday.

Winnipeg is coming off a back-to-back, playing in Edmonton last night, but have won their previous two second games 8-4 and 4-3 on back-to-backs this year. Winnipeg is one of the best teams in the league and Chicago is one of the worst, and that's enough to make me confident the Jets can win by two.

Current Standings: Keefer, (19-17-2, $9,256), Brewer (11-12-1, $9,060), Emerson (0-1, $8,125), Grimala (11-12-1, $4,545)
