Vegas Play of the Day: Cal vs. San Jose State

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

San Jose State basketball vs. Cal, Total Over 144, $990 to win $900: The Cal defense is one of the worst in college basketball in surrendering 77.3 points per game, which ranks 289th nationally out of about 315 teams. In their past four games, the Bears have surrendered 84, 79, 83 and 95 points.

San Jose State isn’t a great offensive team. In fact, it averages just 71 points per game. But junior college transfer Michael Steadman scores nearly 14 points per game, and is tough to guard on the inside. He should thrive against Cal.

Cal is a minus-10 point betting favorite, meaning it should win, and win convincingly. But I am confident San Jose will score in bunches during some part of the game, pushing the total comfortably over the number.

Current Standings: Brewer (11-12-1, $9,060), Keefer (19-19-2, $8,296), Emerson (1-2, $7,789), Grimala (11-12-1, $4,345)
