Vegas Play of the Day: St. Louis Cardinals at Arizona Diamondbacks

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Arizona Diamondbacks over 8 runs at plus-105: $300 to win $315

Anyone who bets baseball has extra reason to celebrate Fourth of July, as they can indulge in a marathon of games around the clock. If you’ve even cursorily followed the Play of the Day, you know that’s a temptation that could be fatal to this bankroll.

I don’t need your e-mails to remind me; I know all too well that I’ve gotten crushed on the bases this year. So I’m going to try to something new today, and in the spirit of our nation, bet on more, more, more.

More runs, that is. The Cardinals and Diamondbacks should be capable of lighting up the Chase Field scoreboard tonight.

Both teams can produce runs to an extent that’s not fully reflected in the total. That’s because starters Patrick Corbin and Mike Mikolas are both having fantastic years.

Some regression could be in store for both of them, as they’re solid pitchers but not quite at the exalted level they’ve managed so far this season. Offense should prevail in Phoenix on this holiday.

Current Standings: Keefer (1-0, $10,675), Brewer (0-0, $10,000), Granger (0-0, $9,800), Grimala (0-1, $9,500)
