Vegas Play of the Day: Tampa Bay Rays at Seattle Mariners

We’ve entered the fourth season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. A participant's failure to place a bet on their scheduled day results in a $200 bankroll penalty.

Ray Brewer won back-to-back titles in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-15.

Tampa Bay Rays plus-122 at Seattle Mariners: $300 to win $366

Too many people fear the unfamiliar. That partially explains why no one is betting on the Rays as they shift to an “opener” strategy, putting reliever Sergio Romo on the mound to start the game.

Rays manager Kevin Cash and the rest of the staff/organization are no dummies. They’re shifting to the unconventional strategy because it increases their winning chances, not inhibits them.

The betting market is having a tough time rationalizing that, however, as three out of every four tickets have come in on the Mariners to drive up the price on this series-opener. These teams are evenly matched, so getting this big of a price on Tampa Bay represents value.

It’s never a bad idea to ride with forward-thinkers.

Current Standings: Keefer (34-27-1, $11,216), Granger (17-16, $9,059), Grimala (16-22, $5,965), Brewer (26-29-1, $4,270)
