Vegas Play of the Day: Mariners at Rays

We’ve entered the fourth season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. A participant's failure to place a bet on their scheduled day results in a $200 bankroll penalty.

Ray Brewer won back-to-back titles in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-15.

Seattle Mariners minus-110 at Tampa Bay Rays: $990 to win $900:This is a classic trap game: Seattle is coming off a hard-fought series at Houston and its players likely won’t have the same intensity against Tampa, a team which is already out of playoff contention.

Yet, I don’t believe the narrative.

Seattle (38-23) is one of baseball’s better teams. The Mariners’ offense, with offseason pickup Dee Gordon leading the way, has a .259 batting average — sixth best in baseball. The slugging percentage is .419, which is ninth best in baseball.

Winning games against teams under .500 such as Tampa Bay is the lone way to stay in contention with Houston atop the American League West.

Keefer (34-28-1, $10,916), Granger (17-16, $8,959), Grimala (16-23, $4,965), Brewer (27-29-1, $5,230)
