Vegas Play of the Day: Mariners at Yankees

Felix Hernandez

Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Felix Hernandez throws against the Tampa Bay Rays in the fourth inning of a baseball game, Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012, in Seattle.

We’ve entered the fourth season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. Ray Brewer won back-to-back titles in the 2015-2016 and 2016-17 seasons, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-2015.

Seattle Mariners plus-177 at New York Yankees: $500 to win $708

“King” Felix Hernandez has struggled mightily away from Safeco Field this season with a dreadful 7.71 earned runs average on the road, so the inflated line does make some sense. Having said that, the Mariners are too good of a team to be plus-177 and I believe there’s value.

Hernandez and the Mariners are fighting neck and neck with the Astros atop the American League West, only two games back despite losing to the Yankees yesterday. I expect a good performance out of the veteran right-hander and the Seattle bats to create enough offense to get him a win.

The Mariners will be facing rookie Yankees pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga, who is making only his second career start after throwing five scoreless innings in his MLB debut in a 5-0 win last Friday. If he comes back to earth a bit, it could mean a big day for Seattle offensively.

Keefer (36-28-1, $11,716), Granger (17-16, $8,959), Brewer (28-30-1, $5,140), Grimala (17-24, $4,605).
