The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.
Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.
Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.
Michigan State vs. Kansas under 156 points: $440 to win $400
The total for the first marquee college basketball game of the year looks a little inflated because of what these teams did last year. Both the Jayhawks and Spartans scored more than their programs usually do in 2017-2018.
Their personnel and style this year makes a small step back on the offensive end look likely. Kansas used a guard-heavy lineup to reach the Final Four and shot more than 3-pointers than any Bill Self-coached team had ever attempted before.
The Jayhawks’ top three scorers are all gone, and Self now wants to transition them back to a more traditional offense and play inside-out.
Michigan State will play similarly after losing two lottery picks of its own. The Spartans don’t have a lot of shooters, and will look to attack the paint.
Look for this game to be more of a bruising interior battle than a free-wheeling trading of jump shots. It might fall well under 156 points.
Current Standings: Keefer (14-12-2, $8,831), Grimala (10-9, $6,765), Brewer (5-11-1, $4,900)
