Vegas Play of the Day: Iowa at Minnesota

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Minnesota plus-7 vs. Iowa, $990 to win $900: Oddsmakers have established the total at just 43 points for this Big 10 Conference game, meaning both teams will struggle moving the ball and scoring. Iowa ranks 97th nationally in points scored out of about 120 teams and won’t easily be able to pull away.

Minnesota is undefeated in three games at home, only giving up 27 points. One of those wins came against Fresno State, which is 21st nationally in scoring at more than 40 points per game and a fringe top-25 team.

Minnesota should be able to maintain its home field advantage and turn this contest into a one-score affair. There’s great value in plus-7, especially with Minnesota having a sincere chance to win the game straight up.

Current Standings: Keefer (11-10-1, $10,281), Grimala (7-5, $8,750), Brewer (5-8-1, $7,040)
