A pair of games between current division leaders highlight the NFL’s week 5 schedule.
The most compelling of the two ends it. Monday Night Football got a good draw in lading the Washington Redskins’ trip to face the New Orleans Saints as 6.5-point underdogs.
They’ve been two of the most impressive teams in the NFC early in the season. Washington started the year as the biggest long shot to win the NFC East, but has seen its odds go down to 5-to-2 from 8-to-1 after starting 2-1 straight-up and against the spread.
The NFC South was considered the most competitive division in football as little as two weeks ago, but the Saints have pulled ahead with two straight victories and covers. They now stand at minus-200 (risking $2 to win $1) to win the division, and are a 10-to-1 fourth choice to win the Super Bowl.
Although a case could be made that a pair of surprise current AFC division leaders — Miami going to Cincinnati as 6-point underdogs — is just as intriguing, Washington at New Orleans is the game of the week in the Sun’s handicapping contest. That means each competing sports writer is forced to use one of six weekly wagers on the contest.
