Vegas Play of the Day: Arizona at Utah

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Arizona plus-14 at Utah: $550 to win $500

The Utes are reportedly taking the vast majority of the action tonight. The problem with that is pretty simple — they can’t score.

Last week’s 40-21 win over Stanford was the anomaly, not the norm, for a Utah team that’s led by its tenacious defense. And a lot of those points deserve to be credited toward the Utes’ defense anyway.

Not only did Utah have a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown in the game, but it also managed four other turnovers to tilt field position in its favor. That’s highly unlikely to repeat in back-to-back weeks, and now Utah is power-rated at an all-time high.

There’s no value left on the Utes, who were a 4-point favorite in this game over the summer in the game of the year lines. Arizona has been disappointing and likely won’t pull the outright upset, but it’s gradually trended in the right direction.

Expect a lower-scoring, more competitive game than expected with the point spread coming into play.

Current Standings: Keefer (11-10-1, $10,081), Grimala (8-5, $9,120), Brewer (5-9-1, $5,850)
