Vegas Play of the Day: Brooklyn at Detroit

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Brooklyn Nets at Detroit Pistons, Total Over 212, $550 to win $500: The Nets allowed 110 points per game last season to rank 28th in the NBA. They did nothing in the offseason to get better, meaning tonight’s season opener should feature plenty of offense.

Detroit scored 129 points in its final preseason game last week. The final preseason outing is generally when starters play a majority of the minutes. Blake Griffin, for example, had 29 points for the Pistons in a good sign for a high-scoring debut.

Last season in two games against Brooklyn, the Pistons scored 114 and 110 points.

It's tough to look at last season’s stats to dictate a result this year, and we’ll surely know more about the league in the upcoming weeks. But the rosters for the Nets and Pistons aren’t drastically different. It’s worth a small play on the over, especially since everyone needs action on opening night, right?

Current Standings: Grimala (10-5, $10,170), Keefer (11-11-1, $9,531), Brewer (5-9-1, $5,850)
