The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Mississippi State plus-6.5 at LSU: $1,100 to win $1,000

I’ve never used the term, “Game of the Year,” before. I’m using the term Game of the Year today.

I love Mississippi State in this spot. The Bulldogs are coming off of a bye, while the Tigers are a week removed from the biggest win of Ed Orgeron’s tenure — a major upset over Georgia.

It’s difficult not only to get motivated to the same level two weeks in a row, but even more importantly, to produce at such a high clip. And make no mistake: LSU will need to play every bit as well as it did against Georgia to beat Mississippi State.

Mississippi State is absolutely loaded and only undervalued because of back-to-back losses to Kentucky and Florida earlier in the year. Both Florida and Kentucky are significantly better than expected and shut down Mississippi State’s offense.

Coach Joe Moorhead is one of the best offensive minds in football, though, and couldn’t be kept down forever. He rebounded to lead the Bulldogs to a 23-9 against Auburn, which has the second-most efficient defense in the nation per the S&P+ ratings.

Give Moorhead an extra week to scheme for LSU, and expect the results to be even better. The Tigers have put together a terrific year, but they’ve overachieved and will experience some regression.

Getting nearly a touchdown with Mississippi State is far too generous.

Current Standings: Keefer (12-11-1, $9,481), Grimala (10-6, $9,245),  Brewer (5-10-1, $5,300)
