Vegas Play of the Day: Falcons vs. Giants

Falcons-Packers

David Goldman / AP

The Atlanta Falcons’ Julio Jones, left, catches a touchdown pass in front of the Green Bay Packers’ Damarious Randall during the second half of the NFC championship game Sunday, Jan. 22, 2017, in Atlanta.

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Atlanta Falcons -4.5 vs. New York Giants: $770 to win $700

Both of these teams are pretty bad, and in situations like this I tend to disregard the line and put my trust in the better quarterback. In this game, that is Matt Ryan of the Falcons. He's not having the best season of his career, but he is a competent passer who can be counted on to lead the Atlanta offense to two or three touchdowns on a weekly basis. Giants' quarterback Eli Manning, on the other hand, cannot be trusted to do anything.

Give me the Falcons, and if Eli somehow plays a credible game and beats me, I can live with that.

Current Standings: Grimala (10-6, $9,245), Keefer (12-12-1, $8,381), Brewer (5-10-1, $5,300)
