Florida State wide receiver Keith Gavin (89) runs against Alabama linebacker Shaun Dion Hamilton (20) during the first half of an NCAA football game, Saturday, Sept. 2, 2017, in Atlanta.

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Florida State Seminoles minus-7 vs. Virginia Tech Hokies, $330 to win $300:

Tonight we get Monday night football a week early, as the Seminoles and Hokies face off in Tallahassee, Fla., in a marquee college football matchup.

Virginia Tech has been an outstanding 16-8 against the spread in its last 24 games as an underdog, but has struggled mightily against Florida State. The Seminoles are 14-2 all-time against Virginia Tech and 6-0 at home.

This game is tough to judge, especially with Florida State quarterback Deondre Francois returning to the field after missing almost all of last season with a torn ACL. Having said that, the Seminoles have owned Virginia Tech so I’ll lay the touchdown with the home favorites.

Francois threw for 3,350 yards, 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions as a freshman in 2016 and he’ll be back under center tonight. The Seminoles have won seven-straight home-openers and that’s good enough for a small bet.

Current Standings: Keefer (9-5, $11,1618), Grimala (6-3, $10,300), Granger (4-1, $9,955), Brewer (3-6, $7,500)
