New York Yankees’ Giancarlo Stanton rounds the bases after hitting a two-run home run during first-inning baseball game action against the Toronto Blue Jays in Toronto on Thursday, March 29, 2018.

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Oakland Athletics plus-110 vs. New York Yankees, $400 to win $440:

The Yankees still have the second-best record in the American League (86-52), but they haven't been playing up to that standard as of late, dropping five of their last eight — including Monday's series opener in Oakland. On the flip side, the Athletics are coming on strong and have a reason to press the issue against the Yankees, as whichever team finishes with the better record will most likely get to host the AL Wildcard game.

Oakland is targeting this as a bullpen game, with reliever Liam Hendriks serving as the "opener" and normal starter Frankie Montas tabbed to come in behind him after an inning or two. I think it will work against the Yankees, who haven't been consistent offensively since losing Aaron Judge to injury.

Current Standings: Keefer (9-5, $11,1618), Grimala (6-3, $10,300), Granger (4-2, $9,625), Brewer (3-6, $7,500)
