The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.
Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.
Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.
Baltimore Orioles plus-200 at Seattle, $500 to win $1,000: At this point of the baseball season, when many of the playoff spots are accounted for, games start to resemble a spring training contest with many minor leaguers trying to show their skills for a roster spot next season. Simply put, anyone can win. That means there is great value is taking heavy underdogs.
While Seattle is just 5 and ½ games out of the second wild card spot in the American League, the Mariners’ chances are slim. They went from having a commanding advantage in the standings about two months ago to collapsing. It got so bad last night that players were fighting with each other in the clubhouse.
So, yes, Baltimore has had an awful season with a 41-98 record entering tonight’s game. But at plus-200, it’s worth a shot — especially with how the Mariners’ players have reacted to their downfall.
