Vegas Play of the Day: New York Jets at Cleveland Browns

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

New York Jets plus-3 at Cleveland Browns: $550 to win $500

Everyone loves the Browns tonight, so give me the Jets.

The contrarian angle isn’t the real, or at least only, reason to back the Jets, though it’s jarring to see 76 percent of the money at William Hill sports books come in on the Browns as a favorite. This is, in case you forgot, a team that’s won one game dating back three seasons.

What’s more important is the Jets are certainly the better-coached team, and probably the better overall team too. A two-game sample isn’t sufficient to draw conclusions from, but the Jets have far outperformed the Browns on both sides of the ball.

New York is gaining 5.8 yards per play on offense to Cleveland’s 4.5 yards per play, while also giving up only 4.8 yards per play to the home team’s 5.3 yards per play.

There’s no disputing that Cleveland has played a tougher schedule, but put it all together, and something doesn’t smell right. The Jets have a great chance to prolong the Browns’ winless streak for yet another week.

Current Standings: Current Standings: Keefer (11-6, $11,391), Grimala (7-3, $9,950), Granger (4-3, $8,825), Brewer (4-8, $6,540)
