Mississippi head coach Hugh Freeze speaks with a reporter about the team’s 38-13 win over Wofford in their NCAA college football game in Oxford, Miss., Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016. No. 19 Mississippi won 38-13.

The sixth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now underway, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2018-19 and 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Liberty plus-18.5 vs. Syracuse: $1,100 to win $1,000

Moral debate aside, Hugh Freeze looks like the perfect head coaching fit for the newest program in the Football Bowl Subdivision. He’s almost surely going to take the Flames to (minor) prominence, and he’s going to announce it to the college football world soon.

Soon, as in this afternoon.

This matchup shapes up as a favorable one for Liberty. The Flames are playing an Orange team that far overachieved last season and is therefore left overvalued coming into this season.

Liberty has more experience and the talent gap isn’t colossal by any means. Much like he did at Ole Miss and Arkansas State, Freeze immediately brought in highly touted recruits — at least relative to Liberty’s stature.

The Flames aren’t going to look a mid-level FCS team anymore. They aren’t going to sound like one either in this game.

This might be the biggest contest in school history and is supposed to have the crowd to match. It’s hard enough to start the season on the road in a hostile environment, let alone lay nearly three touchdowns.

Syracuse will likely be fighting to eke out a close victory.

Current Standings: Grimala (5-1, $11,365), Emerson (4-5, $8,750), Keefer (3-5, $6,425), Brewer (2-8, $5,575)
