Vegas Play of the Day: Maryland at Wisconsin

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Maryland plus-5 at Wisconsin, $880 to win $800: Maryland earlier this season defeated Wisconsin 64-60 at home. But don’t let that score fool you. Maryland had a convincing 15-point lead and should have won by double digits.

The Terps are better at every position, especially in the backcourt with guard Anthony Cowan, who averages 17 points and four assists per game. And on the inside, sophomore Bruno Fernando averages 14 points and 10 rebounds per game. When he withdrew his name from the NBA Draft last spring, it made Maryland an instant Sweet 16 contender.

While Maryland has a 17-5 record and is ranked No. 21 nationally, it suffered an ugly loss last week against Illinois (just 2-8 in Big 10 play). Also, it’s tough to play on the road, meaning oddsmakers are justified in listing the Terps as the underdog. But getting five points is extreme. I’ll take the better team with the points, and hope playing on the road isn’t too much to overcome.

Current Standings: Keefer (26-21-2, $12,226), Brewer (16-14-2, $11,570), Emerson (2-3, $6,987), Grimala (15-14-1, $5,150)
