Nevada sports books banked an eight-figure win on Super Bowl 53 but fell short of setting a record for overall betting handle on the New England Patriots’ 13-3 win against the Los Angeles Rams.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board announced Monday afternoon that the state’s 200 sports books netted a win of $10,780,319 off of $145,780,319 in total wagers. It’s the third time in the last four years that the house has made at least $10 million in the most popularly-bet game of the year.

But predictions that sports betting’s increase in visibility nationwide would boost local volume missed the mark. The $145.78 million wagered was nearly $13 million below the amount of money wagered on Super Bowl 52.

This year’s game will go down as the second-most bet-on Super Bowl in history. It’s also the 11th straight year that sports books have profited, and 27th time in 29 years since the control board began statewide tracking.

The 7.4 percent hold is right in line with historic precedent, as the average comes out to 7.37 percent over nearly three decades.

Casinos presumably lost money with the Patriots’ covering the 2.5-point spread, but recouped the negligible amount with big wins on proposition wagers and the game falling under the 55.5-point total.
