Vancouver Canucks celebrates a 3-2 win after a shootout at T-Mobile Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2018.

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Vancouver Canucks minus-125 at Ottawa Senators: $450 to win $360

At the beginning of the season, there was a debate over which team would be the worst in the NHL between Vancouver and Ottawa. Midway through the year, the conversation has pretty much ceased.

It’s the Senators.

Ottawa has the worst goal differential in the league, at minus-33, and has lost five straight games. Vancouver isn’t great by any means, but it’s friskier than expected with young players like Elias Pettersson and Bo Horvat having taken the next step in their progressions.

And the Canucks are catching the Senators in a tough situation.

Tonight will mark Ottawa’s fourth game in six days, which is tough even on the best teams. Taking all of that into account, this line looks a little short.

The value lies with Vancouver.

Current Standings: Brewer (15-12-1, $10,660), Keefer (21-19-2, $10,096), Emerson (1-3, $7,062), Grimala (12-13-1, $4,030)
