Vegas Play of the Day: Georgetown at Xavier

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Georgetown at Xavier, Total Over 153, $770 to win $700: Georgetown, which averages 83.3 points per game, has scored more than 80 points in each of its last five games and more than 90 points in its last three. Twice, the Hoyas have scored in the 100s.

Georgetown’s metrics are off the charts in pace per game, as it averages 78.9 possessions per game to rank eighth nationally. More important, the Hoyas are one of the worst defensive teams in the nation in surrendering 76.9 points per game, which ranks 295th out of about 320 teams.

Xavier, however, struggles to score. It ranks 279th in possessions per game, meaning it has less opportunities to impact a total-over wager. The hope is Georgetown’s fast pace and struggling defense will help Xavier score enough points to hold up its end of the bargain in this over-under wager.

Current Standings: Brewer (14-12-1, $11,060), Keefer (23-19-2, $10,856), Emerson (1-3, $6,862), Grimala (13-13-1, $4,630)
