Boston Celtics guard Kyrie Irving reacts during the first quarter of a preseason basketball game against the Charlotte Hornets in Boston, Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018.

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Brooklyn Nets plus-3 vs. Boston Celtics: $770 to win $700: The Celtics have developed a habit of playing down to competition this season, which should make today's contest in Brooklyn an interesting affair. The Nets employ the type of 3-point heavy attack that can tear Boston's defense to shreds, as 33.3 percent of their scoring comes from 3-point shots. The Celtics defense ranks 20th in the NBA in opponents' 3-point rate, so expect Brooklyn to let it fly from deep.

If the Nets make their outside shots, they can win this game outright. I think they'll make enough to cover.

Current Standings:Keefer (25-19-2, $11,756), Brewer (15-13-1, $11,320), Emerson (1-3, $6,862), Grimala (13-13-1, $4,630)
