Vegas Play of the Day: Padres vs. Phillies

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

San Diego Padres plus-135 vs. Philadelphia Phillies : $300 to win $405

Slim pickings in the world of baseball tonight. Only four games on the docket, and the Padres seem like too much of a pick-em to pass up on plus-135.

Phillies starter Aaron Nola's 6-0 record is a perfect reason to not trust win-loss record. He may not have lost this year, but he still carries an only OK 4.18 ERA and 1.49 WHIP. He's a fine pitcher and the Phillies may end up winning the National League East, but the Padres aren't scrubs and giving them this value is a gift. Padres starter Eric Lauer meanwhile has been atrocious on the road, spoiling what are strong home numbers.

The Phillies are coming off a sweep in Los Angeles as part of a rough west-coast swing. The Padres have the advantage of not having to travel, and I'll take them in the season opener tonight.

Current Standings: Keefer (36-38-2, $8,946), Brewer (24-23-2, $7,970), Emerson (11-10, $5,657), Grimala (23-25-1, $2,525)
