Vegas Play of the Day: Patriots vs. Giants

Tom Brady, Super Bowl 52

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (12) calls a play against the Philadelphia Eagles, during the first half of the NFL Super Bowl 52 football game, Sunday, Feb. 4, 2018, in Minneapolis.

The sixth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2018-19 and 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

New England Patriots minus-17 vs. New York Giants: $550 to win $500

The huge spread here is going to keep some people away from the Patriots, but don't let those measly 17 points scare you away. New England has the best defense we've seen in decades, and the Giants are starting a rookie quarterback with no good skill-position players on the road on a short week. It would be shocking if the Giants manage to score more than seven points.

That means the Patriots would have to score above 24 points in order to cover, and that's a bet I'm very willing to make against a bad Giants defense. A 30-7 score wins this wager comfortably, and with this colossal mismatch, that's a conservative prediction.

Current Standings: Grimala (7-3, $10,445), Emerson (6-9, $7,920), Brewer (6-8, $7,875), Keefer (9-10-1, $6,325)
