Kenny Atkinson calls to players Nov. 13, 2015, during the first quarter of an NBA basketball game in Boston. The Brooklyn Nets hired the Hawks’ assistant as their new coach, Sunday, April 17, 2016.

The sixth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now underway, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2018-19 and 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Brooklyn Nets minus-2.5 vs. Phoenix Suns: $660 to win $600

There isn't a lot of science behind this pick, just a hunch. There are already whispers about how the Nets seem to play better without supposed superstar Kyrie Irving, and the ponderous point guard's latest trip to the injury list just happens to coincide with Brooklyn's playoff push. I think that push starts today with a convincing home win over Phoenix.

Current Standings: Grimala (13-5, $9,065), Brewer (13-11, $7,695), Keefer (24-22-2, $7,435), Emerson (11-16, $5,450)
