Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones plays against Rutgers during an NCAA NCAA college football game Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014, in Columbus, Ohio.

The sixth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now underway, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2018-19 and 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

DC Defenders minus-6.5 vs. New York Guardians: $1,100 to win $1,000

If this doesn’t close at 7.5, I’ll be mildly surprised. It’s already at 7 at many of the sharpest sports books with the stragglers sure to join in on the key number — regardless of the league — soon.

DC is more than likely not the team to beat in the XFL — I think it’s either still Dallas or Houston — unlike some are claiming after its impressive week 1 victory over Seattle. But a time will come to bet against Cardale Jones and Co.

This isn’t it. This isn’t it because New York is one of the weaker teams in the league despite its 23-3 win over Tampa in week 1.

The Guardians were painfully inefficient on offense and won solely off of its plus-three turnover margin. Jones might not be impervious to losing as he’s being hailed — remember it’s still a small sample size for the former Ohio State star — but he’s also not going to give the game away to the Guardians like Aaron Murray did last week.

Defenders will dominate today.

Current Standings: Grimala (14-5, $9,065), Brewer (14-11, $8,395), Keefer (25-22-2, $8,135), Emerson (13-16, $6,150)
