The sixth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun's sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2018-19 and 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Pro Bowl, Total Over 50.5 points, $990 to win $900: The Pro Bowl has been a low-scoring affair in each of the last three seasons, including in 2019 when the AFC beat the NFC 26-7. It was a brutal viewing experience.

Still, I can’t bring myself to bet an exhibition game under the points total. These games, regardless of the sport, are a celebration of offense as nobody wants to watch a defensive struggle. In 2016, the last time the game went over, the final was 49-27. Hence the big bet.

Nobody wants to get hurt in an exhibition game, meaning there will be little defense and tackling. And there will be no pressure on the quarterback. Think flag football. Think points. Think total over.

Current Standings: Grimala (13-5, $9,265), Keefer (23-22-2, $6,435), Brewer (11-11, $5,895), Emerson (11-16, $5,650).
