Almost every child has big dreams for Christmas morning. They dream of toys and special gifts, and many dream of finding under the Christmas tree a brand-new, shiny bicycle. But because of the difficulties families have faced this year, some kids’ dreams may not come true. This is where local bicycle club Hammer & Cycle come in. Hammer & Cycle want to bring their love of cycling and friendship to the next generation of local Las Vegans. To do this, they formed their first-ever charity drive, “Bikes for Brats”. In typical Hammer & Cycle no-holds-barred-fun-in-your-face style, they had fun coming up with a memorable name for the drive, and have worked hard to purchase and request donations for new children’s bikes from businesses and individuals around the valley. “We are just working class folks. We are parents. We know what it’s like to try and save for Christmas. And we know what the joy in a kid’s eyes looks like when they get just what they always wanted on Christmas morning. We want every parent to have a chance to experience that.” said Matt Tamiazzo, club founder. “We ride bikes for fun. We want to share that fun.”
Bikes for Brats has already collected nearly 50 bikes from local bars and businesses. Every club member has purchased at least one bike or bike equipment such as helmets, bells and pads. Hammer & Cycle also held a charity bike seat auction, where club members and friends of the club created original bike seat designs, a sort of bike seat as art project, and raised over $1500 to purchase more bikes before the charity event deadline of December 8th. On the evening of the 8th, the club will ride to meet Chet Buchanan at his 14th Annual Chet Buchanan and the Morning Zoo Toy Drive along with a trailer full of all the bikes they’ve been able to purchase and collect. “It’s about doing good, giving back.” said Dan Mathos, club council member.
The club will meet on the evening of the 8th and ride to meet Chet Buchanan and his crew around 7 PM. This is an event that shouldn’t be missed, as the Hammer & Cycle crew is known for creating quite a stir whenever they ride together.
Hammer & Cycle rides monthly through different local neighborhoods, generally on the third Saturday evening of every month. The club also supports weekly rides and other events.
