Parent supports Autism Speaks to raise awareness and set a Guinness World Record™
February 7, 2013 - Troy “TriTroy” Lovick is a devoted parent with a passion for the sport of triathlon and a reputation for tackling challenges. On March 3, 2013, Mr. Lovick will dive into the frigid water of San Francisco Bay for the swim leg of the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon and the first of 52 triathlons. 30 of those triathlons will be 70.3 mile long course events. If successful, this will set a new Guinness World Record™ for most 70.3mi triathlons completed in one year. But, if you ask Troy, he’ll tell you his greatest challenge is the one he faces every day - the challenge of parenting a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
“It was an incredibly difficult and frustrating journey before we got the ASD diagnosis. It’s been my experience that educators, health care providers and the institutions parents rely upon simply do not have the knowledge, training or tools to assist families affected by ASD. Unfortunately, my story is all too common. I’m going to crisscross the nation for this event calling attention to the Services and Resources of Autism Speaks so no other families have to suffer and struggle unnecessarily,” said Troy.
Troy has combined his passion for triathlon and the motivating power of his frustration into a year long fundraising event to benefit Autism Speaks. Once thought to affect only 1 in 10,000 children, autism is now known to affect 1 in 88 children and 1 of every 54 boys in the U.S.
Autism Spectrum Disorders range from mild to severe across three core areas: difficulties with social interactions, communication challenges and tendencies to engage in repetitive behaviors. ASD is often associated with other physical or medical conditions. Early diagnosis and intervention is crucial, although everyone in the spectrum will benefit from treatment and therapy throughout their lives.
