Clark County Teachers to Participate in Education Awareness Day
Published on Fri, Feb 22, 2013 (2:14 p.m.)Thousands of teaching professionals unite in their call for MORE funding for public schools

On Monday, February 25, 2013, Education Awareness Day, more than 10,000 teaching professionals in over 300 schools will unite to make lawmakers aware of the harsh realities in their classrooms and schools. They will show their support for creating stable and adequate funding for Nevada schools by wearing a “More 4 Schools” button.
Over the last five years school district budgets have been cut by over $800 million. This lack of funding has resulted in our schools being stripped to the core – in program cuts and elimination, in overcrowded classrooms (especially in Clark County where over 217 elementary schools are above capacity), and in the elimination of vital English Language Learner (ELL) programs and resources. These are just some of the resources our schools must do without due to inadequate funding.
In Clark County, where over 309,000 students attend school, the needs are magnified by the lack of ELL resources. More than 50,000 students depend on those resources, yet find them unavailable because the state has failed to fund them. At Fay Herron Elementary School, where a predominantly ELL student population attends, teaching and learning conditions have been greatly eroded. This erosion is exacerbated by their largely overcrowded setting.
The conditions at Herron are not unique to this poor neighborhood; they are becoming more widespread throughout Clark County. Students and teachers are forced to live with the consequences of an ill-funded and unsupported education system.
Teachers want to change this course. They care greatly about their students’ learning and are committed to engaging legislators. To give voice to the many needs in our schools, the Clark County Education Association has mobilized and organized teachers across the district.
