DECA Members Make It Count Outside of the Classroom

Published on Mon, Nov 11, 2013 (9:45 p.m.)

You might be asking yourself, “What is DECA?” There is the textbook answer which says DECA is a nationally recognized non-profit student organization that prepares emerging leaders & entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality & management. The members are academically prepared, community oriented, professionally responsible, experienced leaders. At the collegiate level we emphasize a co-curricular structure by literally taking what is learned in the classroom and connecting it to the boardroom through hands-on learning experiences.

Although this answer explains exactly what DECA is, it still doesn’t give the organization meaning. Nicholas Huynh, UNLV Collegiate DECA President says “DECA has taught me to go beyond what I know and venture into the unknown with confidence and wisdom.” Anyone who has ever been involved will tell you that DECA is a life changing experience. It is not just another club at school that you participate in; it’s a lifestyle that stays with you. The members are not just students; they are thriving to become America’s future. The lessons learned in this organization are not just for the classroom, they teach you about life and how to push yourself beyond your own expectations. If you ever get the chance to walk into a room full of DECA students you will not only look around see their passion, dedication, and personal drive but you will personally feel everything that these members embrace.

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Collegiate DECA Chapter recently picked up a proclamation from Mayor Carolyn Goodman’s office proclaiming November 17th – 23rd as UNLV Collegiate DECA Week. The national month long celebration challenges its members to create awareness in their schools and communities by planning DECA activities as well as marketing their chapter through social media and community channels.

For the month of November the UNLV Collegiate DECA chapter has planned a calendar full of events, not only for its members, but also their high school division, the UNLV campus, and the Las Vegas community. Some of these activities include visiting a local high school chapter to discuss the collegiate experience, a Panel Discussion on November 18th with four industry leaders showcasing, “Building Your Own Brand” in your dream career, traveling to Utah for a Fall Leadership Conference and Case Study Competition, collecting donations for the UNLV food pantry, preparing for the online business plan event during Global Entrepreneurship Week, an adviser appreciation, training for the national professional development conference in D.C. this upcoming April, and starting their submission for the national membership recognition program.

This year alone the UNLV executive team has seen tremendous growth, increasing from 15 to 56 members. Each of them are actively doing their part to make a difference in not only their lives but the community. The chapter has also been reaching out to secure judges for their upcoming competition preparation sessions, as well as, obtaining local business sponsors in exchange for social media and chapter recognition.

In support of the mayor’s proclamation they challenge everyone in their community to, instead of asking what DECA is, to answer this question in their own words. Contact a local chapter today and show your support of passionate young leaders.
