Moms Mark Mother’s Day by Sending Message to Congressional Reps

(Las Vegas, Nev.) – Mothers and their children – and a few dads – made Mother’s Day about clean air and healthy communities Saturday (May 12) by creating messages to go to Nevada’s federal congressional representatives.

Moms worked with the Nevada Conservation League to create the event at the Roots Community Garden in Las Vegas in support of legislation to control dangerous chemicals in homes and workplaces, and in support of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s authority to regulate dangerous airborne pollution such as the carbon produced by coal-fired power plants.

“As mothers, we have a huge investment in safe schools, workplaces and homes, and in clean air for our children,” said Anna Turner, who is a Las Vegas mother of a 7-year-old girl and who recently joined the NCL staff. “Congress needs to update the federal Toxic Substances Control Act to take into account research that shows that chemical are building up in the environment and in our bodies, and threatening the health of our families.

“And Congress also needs to let the federal scientists with the EPA do their job in controlling air pollution, including carbon pollution from coal plants,” Turner said.

She said the best Mother’s Day present that lawmakers could deliver to Nevada would be a healthy environment for everyone’s children.

Joining the moms and kids at the event were several candidates for political office and regular gardeners with the community garden who stopped by to add their colorful messages to the congressional delegation.
