Princess Mononoke

When filmmakers, critics and fans talk about the works of the great animation director Hayao Miyazaki—now 75 years old, and still working—they usually invoke the names of three films before all others: Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro and Princess Mononoke. The first two films, while spectacular to behold, are more or less about families, while 1997’s Mononoke has the ambitions of a Lawrence of Arabia-like epic: In it, Miyazaki addresses nothing short of man’s ongoing and largely one-sided war against nature. Mononoke’s world of forest demons, cursed princes and feral warriors raised by wolves is like nothing else you’ve seen, even 20 years since other filmmakers first began to imitate it. It returns to theaters for two nights on January 5 (with subtitles) and January 6 (dubbed). Immerse yourself in the genius of Miyazaki.
