What is Ballot Question 9?
Ballot Question 9 is a 2000 voter initiative that legalized medical marijuana use for qualified patients. While this was definitely a win for the state, it would take 15 years for the Nevada Medical Marijuana Cardholders/Caregivers Program to actually become functional.
How does Ballot Question 2 Impact MMJ in Nevada?
Ballot Question 2, the legislation which legalized recreational cannabis in Nevada, actually helped the medical cannabis community. Positive public support for marijuana has never been higher, paying the way for massive program improvements to the program. In fact, a valid government-issued medical marijuana card from any state grants you access to medical marijuana in Nevada.
As a result, medicinal cannabis patients and caregivers have an easier application process, greater access to marijuana, stronger cultivation rights and more. But the biggest change is that the application process has been moved entirely online. Who wants to travel to wait in long lines when you can apply from home?
Benefits of a Nevada Medical Marijuana Card
Every Nevada NuggMD MMJ-approved patient receives a medical marijuana card that entitles them to some privileges that recreational users simply can’t access.
For example, a state registry card excludes you from Nevada’s unusual law that prohibits cultivating marijuana within 25 miles of a dispensary, should you qualify. Remember, you’re still limited to growing 12 plants per property.
Additional benefits of a Nevada Registry I.D. Card include, but are not limited to:
- Exemption from the 10% retail excise tax so you always pay less for cannabis.
- Ability to possess and purchase 2.5 oz. of cannabis flower and concentrates, or 10,000mg of edibles bi-monthly (every 14 days). Recreational users are limited to 1 oz. of flower or 1/8th of concentrates..
- Ability to use marijuana for medical treatment at age 18. If you’re younger, you’ll need a parent or guardian to sign a release form permitting its use.
- Option of applying for a 2-year card instead of the standard 1-year.
Applying for a Nevada Registry I.D. Card

The current qualify conditions for medical marijuana are:

If approved, you’ll receive your Nevada Medical Cannabis Card by mail in about a week while you can use the temporary “letter of approval” (good for 60 days) to instantly start using MMJ.
Common Reasons for Rejected Applications
The most common reason for rejection is an incomplete application. If this is the case, you can apply again, but you must repay the application fee.
Unfortunately, if you have a commercial driver’s license or serious criminal convictions (not a simple drug possession charge) you are not eligible to join Nevada’s Medical Marijuana Cardholders/Caregivers Program.
