Genoans Want New Post Office Site

Residents angry with the Postal Service's decision to build a large facility outside the town limits called a protest meeting Monday night to find a way to stop the government's plans.

By the end of the three-hour meeting, the group of 40 had decided that the best way to help themselves was to help the Postal Service find another site.

The U.S. Postal Service announced March 15 that, following a search that began in 1986, it had decided to buy a 2 1/2 -acre parcel on Genoa Lane at Pioneer Trail. Plans call for a 5,200-square-foot facility, plus parking.

Almost immediately, Pioneer Trail residents and others in Genoa reacted strongly - with complaints about the chosen location and also about the facility's impact on traffic and the environment and the way the Postal Service went about its selection.

Mel Cole, who lives in the Pioneer Trails subdivision, was chosen to head an informal committee to find what residents - not the Postal Service - will consider a suitable site.

The committee, comprised of representatives from each homeowners' association and other Genoa groups, plans its first meeting Wednesday.

The group hopes that by offering to find a site that meets everyone's needs, the Postal Service will reconsider its selection and cancel its plans to buy the Genoa Lane site.
