Water District targets savings with retrofit

A new Las Vegas Valley Water District program hopes to prevent 338 million gallons of water from going down the drain each year.

About 96,000 homes built before 1986 without current plumbing codes requiring low-flow fixtures have been targeted for a retrofit program begun Monday and continuing through this month, water officials said.

The targeted homeowners will receive a packet containing a questionnaire, toilet leak detection dye tablets and a shower flow test bag designed to help determine whether new low-flow fixtures are needed.

Water district Conservation Manager David Riggleman said the average homeowner can save up to 23,000 gallons a year by replacing old showerheads, faucet aerators and toilet flappers with new ones.

Ten days after receiving the completed questionnaire, the district will send out a retrofit kit with low-flow showerheads, faucet aerators and fill-cycle regulators.

Affected customers who have not received their questionnaires by May 1 should call the retrofit hotline at 221-7975.
