Bighorn tag to be bid on at banquet

Ticket sales are under way for the annual Wildlife Habitat Improvement of Nevada (WHIN) banquet at the Gold Coast June 1. The banquet highlight will be the auctioning of a desert bighorn sheep hunting tag.

The successful bidder will have the opportunity to hunt a desert bighorn ram from Nov. 30 to Jan. 1 in all of the state's desert bighorn hunting units with the exception of 281 and 282.

Each year the Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners authorizes two organizations to auction desert bighorn sheep tags. An auction tag sold for $55,000 during the Nevada Bighorns Unlimited banquet in Reno March 22.

All proceeds from the bid tags go to the Nevada Division of Wildlife's newly established Heritage Fund for game enhancement projects.

Tickets are $45 each and include dinner and an annual organization membership. For ticket information, call 393-4636.

Notes

* BIG GAME APPLICATIONS: Big game applications are available now at most hunting license vendors and at the Nevada Division of Wildlife office at 4747 W. Vegas Drive. Applications must be received by mail at the Hunt Application Office in Fallon by 5 p.m., April 22 to be eligible for the tag drawings.

* WILDERNESS RESERVATION SYSTEM: All quota trails on the Inyo National Forest in California will be 100 percent reservable this year as the Inyo turns its Wilderness Reservation Service over to a private contractor. Reservations will be accepted until two days before trail entry. Any unreserved permits will be available starting the day before entry at the ranger station. Permits for non-quota trails also will be reservable. Hikers interested in Mt. Whitney will need a special permit stamp to enter the Mt. Whitney Zone. Day hikers also need a permit. Reservations will be accepted by phone, fax or mail at the following: Wilderness Reservations, P.O. Box 430, Big Pine, CA 93513. Telephone: (619) 938-1136. FAX: (619) 938-1137.

* SEPTEMBER CAMPING: If you're interested in camping in any of the California state parks in September, it's time to make reservations. A few southern California beach parks are nearly booked for the Labor Day weekend. However, inventory for September in the rest of the state still is good. To make reservations, call 1-800-444-7275.

* OTTER CREEK FISHING: Fishing reports from Otter Creek Reservoir in Southern Utah are encouraging. Trolling with Flatfish or Kwikfish and neon- colored Triple Teasers seems to be the most productive. Fish in the three- to five-pound range have been taken. Power Bait from shore seems to work well, too.
