Seniors enjoy Havasu event

THE NEVADA STATE Seniors Golf Club assembled a large field (120 players) for its annual pilgrimage to the London Bridge and Stonebridge courses in Lake Havasu, Ariz.

Both layouts were in terrific condition, the weather was wonderful and accordingly, the scores were better than the norm. Format for the 54-hole event was gross scores of partners.

Howard Wieland and Moe Winter, for the umpteenth time, won the first flight with a score of 290. Iva Gales and Wayne Lathrop placed second with 301 while Bob Bruce and Jim Hogan were third with 302.

Pat Lynch and Joe Malais won net honors with 254, followed by Bill Bayer and Stile Markey at 260 and Lou Cangey and Tony Gamez at 268.

Second flight gross victors were Andy Wheeler and Duwayne Terlinden at 325, with low net going to John Coyle-Bob Oliverius at 262.

Barney Barnes and Jim Hironaka took gross honors in the third flight with 326, while net honors went to Dick Thurmond and Billy Shope with 259.

In the fourth flight, Dick Danzak and Ralph Long's 346 prevailed for low gross, while the Mike Malone-Bob Tyler pairing took low net with 263.

The Las Vegas Senior Classic set for April 25-28 at the TPC in Summerlin will have a tournament within a tournament, as 16 of the Senior PGA Tour's senior statesmen go head-to-head in a 36-hole MasterCard/Grand Masters competition.

The plus 60-year-old players will tee in a pro-am the Sheraton Desert Inn Golf Club on April 24. The official 36-hole MasterCard/Grand Masters competition will begin April 26 at the TPC.

The 16 super seniors will vie for an $18,000 first prize from a $120,000 purse. Although these earnings are unofficial, the participants will collect official prize money for their finishing position in the 54-hole Las Vegas Senior Classic.

The Winterwood Men's Golf Association is accepting entries for its 10th annual Charity Classic, set for April 28 at the Boulder City Golf Course.
