Power outage disrupts university employees

UNLV's Flora Dungan Humanities Building was vacated after a second power outage and likely will remain empty through Saturday.

Luckily, the university is observing spring break this week and classes have not been disrupted by the outage. But administrators and faculty, whose offices are located in the building and who had planned to catch up on their work during the break, weren't so lucky.

The outage disabled the air-conditioning system and fire alarms, so personnel are not allowed to work in the building during repairs.

The building was cleared when a transformer blew out Friday and now technicians believe a cable malfunctioning between the eighth and ground floor caused the second outage Wednesday. The problem is being traced, but university spokesman Tom Flagg said the electrical contractor doesn't expect to solve the problem before the end of the week.

The president's office and several college departments are housed in the building.

A hotline -- 895-3200 -- has been set up to provide daily updates to those who work in the building that faces Maryland Parkway.
