Silverado artist is phone book’s cover boy

His interpretation of this year's theme, "Kites of many colors fill the sky of Southern Nevada," was selected from more than 1,000 entries in the 14th annual Phone Cook Cover Contest. Ryan's pastels-and-ink depiction of kites over a mountain range will be displayed on the cover of more than 750,000 phone books.

The long-standing contest is a joint effort of Sprint/Central Telephone-Nevada, phone-book publisher Reuben H. Donnelley, and the Clark County School District Partnership Program. The entries were divided into three divisions: high school, middle/junior high school and elementary school.

In addition to the individual prizes -- a U.S. Savings Bond, a YMCA gift certificate, a plaque and a ribbon -- each first-place winner's school received a $1,500 grant for educational materials from Sprint/Central Telephone-Nevada and Donnelley. Silverado High School, Brown Junior High and Tobler Elementary were the three grant recipients.

The individual student winners were:

HIGH SCHOOL: first place, Ryan Olivetti, 10th grade, Silverado; second place, Amelia Davie, 12th grade, Silverado; third place, Michael Stetts, 10th grade, Silverado; honorable mention, Arthur Hernandez, 11th grade, Silverado.

JUNIOR HIGH: first place, Sierra Garduno, eighth grade, Brown Junior High; second place, Dustin Barron, eighth grade, Brown; third place, Mike Nole, eighth grade, Johnson; honorable mention, Jessica Burdett, eighth grade, Knudson.
