Today should finish spring heat wave

Whew, it's hot.

The mercury climbed to 86 Sunday -- sending long-dormant air conditioners into action -- and was expected to reach 90 today.

But, wait, summer is not here yet. Temperatures are expected to drop throughout the week to the normal of 75 degrees for this time of year on Saturday.

And while thousands ventured to Lake Mead over the Easter holiday weekend -- traditionally the start of the lake's summer season -- many apartment complex pools remained closed, still undergoing off-season repairs, leaving residents finding other ways to stay cool.

And Wet 'n Wild, the water theme park on the Strip, is not slated to open until May 4. Just as well because, by week's end, the National Weather Service indicates folks will be turning off their air conditioners and opening doors and windows to enjoy springtime breezes.

The brief heat wave, caused by a large area of high pressure hovering over the Southwest, will give way to a cold front that will drop temperatures to the low 80s by Wednesday and the low to mid-70s by the weekend.

Tuesday will be mostly sunny, becoming windy by afternoon, with highs in the upper 80s.

Seven years ago, the hottest April in history featured records in the upper 90s from April 6-9. The record high for this date was set at 98 degrees. There has never been a 100-degree April day recorded in Las Vegas.
