Watercraft inspections set at lakes

Watercraft owners are invited to participate in a free safety and equipment inspection this weekend at Lake Mead.

Inspections of everything from personal watercraft to houseboats are offered from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Boulder Harbor at Lake Mead Marina and at Katherine Landing on Lake Mohave.

Included will be a review of the emergency equipment on board such as fire extinguishers, flotation devices, lighting and signaling systems.

"Failure to have a properly equipped boat has contributed to many accidents on the water, including fatal incidents," said Bob McKeever, assistant chief ranger.

Nearly 300 boating accidents were reported last year, 75 of which involved personal watercraft.

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will be conducting the inspections. The National Park Service had requested the auxiliary inspect its patrol boats for the lakes and provide the same service to private boaters as well.
