Geography whiz returns to state finals

It is the second year in a row that Nasshan has advanced to the state competition, which will be held later this spring.

The winner of the state competition will represent Nevada in national competition. Those finalists will compete for a $25,000 scholarship, $500 in cash and $750 worth of National Geographic products for the student's school.

Nasshan competed against winners from each class in the fourth through eighth grades at the Hebrew Academy to advance.

SANDS STUDENTS -- The Sands hotel-casino recently rewarded a group of 57 straight-A students by hosting them for a free lunch buffet. The Gibson Middle School honor students, ages 11 to 14, enjoyed a full day of activities, from miniature golf at the Scandia Fun Center to the Sands' Funtime Lunch Buffet. Sixth-grader Jason Sanderson said, "It was my goal to get straight A's and get to come to this. ... I'm gonna have to get more A's."

MARKETING WHIZZES -- Clark High School's DECA Chapter was represented at the recent state conference at the Hacienda. In the test of marketing and advertising know-how, Clark's Perryn Hale finished first in the advertising and visual display category. Christopher Powell and Josh Geidel finished second and third in vehicles- and petroleum-marketing competency. Hale, Powell and Geidel have been invited to the national conference in Orlando, Fla., April 26-May 1. Other Clark students recognized for achievement were Korina Gromek, finance and credit; Tery Damon and Crystal Ramseur, retail marketing; and J. Dapper, restaurant marketing.

ELKS SCHOLARS -- Las Vegas Elks Lodge No. 1468 recently presented scholarships to the following high school students: Scott Bailey of Silverado ($1,000), Alicia Foyt of Chaparral ($1,000), Eric Peterson of Bonanza ($800), Jolene Yukes of Green Valley ($800), Kelly Brinkerhoff of Las Vegas ($700), Melanie Borom of Clark ($700), Jason Lappe of Silverado ($700), Jennifer Larsen of Chaparral ($700) and Jennifer Navarro of Valley ($700). Foyt, Bailey and Yukes went on to win Elks National Foundation Scholarship Awards of an additional $1,000.

POSTER KIDS -- Clark High School students Rebecca Pickford and Jennifer Adams have won the school district's "Stay in School" poster contest. Both will received ribbons and certificates. Pickford, who took first place, also will receive a $25 gift certificate from Target Stores. Their sponsoring art teacher, Toni Brody, will receive $100 for instructional supplies as a gift funded by Household Bank.

SPEAKER CONTEST -- Jessica Martin of Eldorado High has won the third level of the Lions Club's 59th annual Student Speaker Contest. Jessica will compete in the statewide level of competition in Reno on April 27. If successful, she has two more levels to win to achieve the $17,500 scholarship. This year's subject is "Affirmative Action." This is her third year of participation in the contest. The contest is open to all high school students in California and Nevada. ACADEMIC SCHOLAR -- Stephanie Davy of Cheyenne High has been awarded a Carr Academic Scholarship at Angelo State University for 1996-97. More than 300 scholarships, ranging in value from $1,500 to $6,000, were awarded to high school seniors. Students must rank in the top 15 percent of their class and present a combined math and verbal score of 1150 on the SAT or a composite score of 25 on the ACT.
