Mehta set for Vanda Master gala

Both Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra are celebrating their 60th birthdays this year.

Mehta, closely associated with the Israel Philharmonic for more than three decades, will conduct Strauss' "Don Quixote" and Beethoven's Symphony No. 7.

The orchestra presents more than 150 concerts each year in Israel alone. In addition, tours have included performances at major European music capitals as well as frequent trips to the United States.

Throughout its history, the Israel Philharmonic has featured many prominent conductors, beginning with Arturo Toscanini, who led its very first public performance, and including Claudio Abbado, Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Monteux, Dimitri Mitropoulous and Eugene Ormandy.

Mehta, who first conducted the orchestra in 1961 when he was 25 years old, has led it on tours around the world and on recordings for Sony Classical.

Mehta, born in Bombay, India, held the post of music director of the New York Philharmonic from 1978 to 1991, the longest tenure in that orchestra's history.

The Israel Philharmonic's eight-city tour will take them to New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, New Haven, Conn., Ann Arbor, Mich., Las Vegas and Purchase, N.Y.

Tickets are $50, $75, $100, $150 and $250 at the UNLV Performing Arts Center box office, 895-3801.
