Stars come close, but lose 7th game

SALT LAKE CITY -- If there is any consolation in the way the Las Vegas Stars have opened the season, it's that they haven't been blown out in any of their losses.

Five of the Stars' seven losses have been by two runs or less. On Monday, the Stars (3-7) suffered their third straight defeat to Salt Lake as the Buzz broke a 3-3 tie with an unearned run in the eighth inning and held on for a 4-3 win.

The Buzz mounted its game-winning rally when Brian Raabe reached first on a fielding error by Stars second baseman Luis Lopez. Raabe moved to third on a single by Todd Walker and scored on a ground out by Kevin Reimer.

Stars reliever Pete Walker (0-1) allowed one unearned run on one hit, walked one and struck out three in 1 1/3 innings and took the loss.

Salt Lake took a 1-0 lead on Todd Walker's solo home run in the fourth, but the Stars erased that deficit with three runs in the sixth. Riccardo Ingram drove in a run with a ground out and Jason Thompson and Rob Deer connected for solo home runs.

The Buzz tied the score in the seventh on a solo home run by Damian Miller and a run-scoring fly ball by Steve Hazlett.

The series concludes tonight at 6:05 with the Stars' Scott Lewis facing Salt Lake's Travis Miller. The Stars have a day off Wednesday and begin a four-game series in Tacoma on Thursday night.
