Sex with kids draws 3 life terms

William Fain sat in court for his sentencing with a detached, almost bored, look on his face as his young victims' mothers told of the psychological scars he left on their daughters.

Fain has admitted that he videotaped himself having sex with young girls he had been babysitting and he knew he was going to prison for three consecutive life prison terms.

The mother of a now-6-year-old girl chastised the unresponsive Fain for having "stolen my trust, my family's trust and my daughter's trust."

"She says he's a bad man who hurt her very badly," the woman told District Judge Joseph Pavlikowski. "It breaks my heart to see what she goes through."

The mother of the second girl, now 5, glared at Fain and emotionally barked, "I can't believe you would do that to a child. You stole something from a little girl and now you're going to pay for that."

But the woman suddenly stopped her statement with the realization that the words had no impact on Fain, who stared blankly at the defense table where he was seated in belly chains and jail garb.

The woman turned to the judge and said in frustration, "He has no remorse at all, you can tell by the look on his face. He doesn't care at all."

The 31-year-old man had pleaded guilty to 15 counts of sexually assaulting the girls. He knew the plea bargain would put him in prison for 30 years before he is even eligible for parole.

In court, he declined to seek leniency or acknowledge the families of his victims, who huddled in the courtroom to close an ugly chapter in their lives.

Deputy District Attorney John Lukens called the three consecutive life prison terms "an adequate sentence in this case."

He noted that Fain had come from a privileged background and said the case shows such sex crimes "cut across all boundaries of society."

Without comment, Pavlikow-ski handed Fain the sentence Lukens had recommended.

After Fain pleaded guilty Feb. 28, Lukens said, "There is not a reasonable possibility of this man ever being on the streets of Las Vegas again."

Lukens, who heads the Crimes Against Women and Children Unit of the district attorney's office, said the big winners in the case are the victims, who won't have to testify in court about their experiences.

"They don't have to go back to the dark hole where they were," Lukens said at that hearing.

Fain's attorney, Michael Cherry, indicated the plea bargain was inevitable after four psychological exams showed the defendant was competent to stand trial on the original sexual assault and child pornography charges.

As part of the plea bargain, 14 other charges against Fain will be dismissed.

Lukens described as "horrendous" the videotape evidence showing Fain engaged in sexual acts with two girls, ages 3 and 4.

Lukens has said that a third child also was videotaped, but it was decided that because of the numerous counts already pending it was unnecessary to file additional charges.

"We know this goes on, but we never thought we'd see anyone videotape what we know goes on," Lukens said about the videos he said appeared to have been taped by Fain.

Lukens said the parents of the girls were unaware that their children had been victimized until authorities tracked them down after the existence of the videos surfaced.

Fain was arrested in early June on the charges at his family's home in the Las Vegas Country Club after police were given a videotape of the sexual acts.
