Crashing car cuts power

A motorist who crashed into a southern Las Vegas power pole temporarily blacked out area street lights and portions of McCarran International Airport.

The driver, who name has not been released, hit a pole near Tamarus Street and Russell Road at 3:55 p.m. Wednesday, knocking it to the ground, police said.

Traffic signals from Maryland Parkway to Paradise Road were out for at least a half hour, authorities said, along with the lights in the airport's terminal 2.

"The power outage in no way affected our air traffic controllers," said Adam Mayberry, airport spokesman. "The outage affected only isolated areas of the airport, and not the main terminal."

Traffic experienced delays until Nevada Power Co. crews could reconnect power to the affected street lights and the airport about 20 minutes later, Mayberry said.
